Feedback On My Digipak and Magazine Advert

For part of my research, I screened my album digipak and the magazine advert poster which advertises my digipak. I displayed these in front of my teacher and my classmates. Above are 2 feedback sheets from both my teacher and one of my classmates. What the majority of my classmates enjoyed about the digipak and the magazine poster was that: the background images were conventional for the genre of music for the artist, the poster was clean and simplistic and the colour schemes for both fitted. However, what they suggested to improve was to change the image on the second CD, make the barcode smaller on the advert, add colour on the top spines, make the social media smaller on magazine and to rearrange the layout on the poster. By taking the advice and improvements on board, I will ensure that my next version of both my digipak and my magazine poster will be up to the best standard possible.

Feedback On The First Draft Music Video

As part of feedback, we previewed the first draft of the music video to our classmates and our teacher. Above are 2 feedback sheets filled in, one from our teacher and one from our classmate. What I found and learned from the feedback was that people enjoyed the silhouette scenes within the video and enjoyed the lighting, transitions, the performance and the visuals. However, what they disliked and need improving was that it ends too abruptly, needs more emphasis on the lip sync, exaggeration on the performance is needed, needs more variety, the narrative needs more of an emphasis and more cinematography on the dance sequences. By taking the feedback on board, I will be able to improve upon my next draft for the music video and ensure that all things that the feedback said needs improving will be improved.

Love In The Dark - First Draft

This is the first draft of the 'Love In The Dark' music video. After consistently staying behind to film and edit the music video, the first draft is complete. Although the first draft is missing the narrative and still needs more scenes, I will be creating a survey which asks my class members how they feel is the best way to convey and portray the narrative for my music video.

Thursday 8 December 2016

Today I stayed inside during school by myself to edit the remains of the first draft for the music video. By using Final Cut Pro, I furthered my editing skills by including some graphic effects during the miming/lip-syncing scenes within the video. Now that there're no visible gaps left in the music video, the first draft is now complete. Although the first draft is complete, I am still aware that the video is essentially not finished as of yet but through the feedback I will be receiving from my teachers and my class members, I will be able to improve upon the first draft and ensure that the final version of the music video will be as best as it can possibly be.

Tuesday 29 November 2016

Today, I stayed throughout school by myself to again further edit the rest of the first draft for my music video. I edited - so far - up to past the 2:30 mark of the first draft. Continuing on from what I had already began editing the previous Friday, I followed in terms of editing further the lip syncing scenes of Jazmine to the song and editing more of the silhouette scenes. By allowing myself more time to edit and manipulate Final Cut Pro to my advantage, I looked at a variety of effects and transitions to help exude creativity within the first draft of the video and make some scenes stand out more effectively the with transition of 'fading to colour'.

Friday 25 November 2016

Today, I stayed behind after school to begin the editing process for my music video. After filming the second take of the music video for 'Love In The Dark', I used the various amounts of footage from these scenes to edit upon. To edit, I used our school's Apple iMac computers and used the editing software of 'Final Cut Pro'. I began the editing for the first minute of the first draft of the music video which consisted of the miming scenes and the silhouette scenes. Whilst editing this together with the music, I found it extremely challenging to match Jazmine's lip syncing in time with the song itself. But, in this time, I was looking for ways to try and manipulate the black and white effect for the silhouette scenes to help make the silhouette of Jazmine more prominent.

Second Music Video Shoot

For our second music video shoot, me, Jazmine and Danny stayed behind after school to use our drama room facilities containing stage lights. On this day, I managed to film Jazmine miming/lip-syncing to Adele's, Love In The Dark in various different lighting and situations. We managed to get a variety of close up shots, mid shots, tracking side to side with a combination of dim lighting to exude only Jazmine's face and dim-red lighting to exude Jazmine's physique and hair.

Test Shoot for Silhouette for the Music Video

Today, both me and Jazmine stayed after school to film our first take/draft for our music video. We used our school's drama room which features a wide dark room with stage lighting. This was very helpful because this meant that I could play around with various lighting material to make particular things stand out and be significant when being filmed. Whilst filming, I used a tripod, a camera and a dolly. The tripod and camera use worked efficiently and allowed me to get clear and concise footage. However, by using the dolly, I attempted to try and track forwards and pan around the star but, with the use of the dolly, this made the camera unstable and as a result, made it look shaky which is now ultimately footage that we can't use.

Furthermore, me and Jazmine constructed the white sheet and put the necessary lighting equipment behind the sheet in order to film our first take for our silhouette scenes in order to see how it would essentially look. We positioned 2 lights behind the screen and had Jazmine stand in front of the screen to form the impression of a silhouette figure. During this, we played around with various body movements and expressions to try and show the star being in the form of a silhouette. Whilst filming this scene, I used a camera technique of a focus-pull when the star walks in to the frame. This allowed the audience to be introduced to the dark, mysterious figure for the first time.

After me and Jazmine saw how everything appeared after our first filming shoot, it is clear that we will essentially have to re-shoot the scenes in order to make it clearer and more visually appealing.

The Magazine Poster Advert for Digipak

In order to help traditionally promote 'Jazmine's' new album, I decided to create an album/Digipak magazine advert which features key information to the general public about what is to come. My magazine advert features: the same album cover as the digipak so that the public can familiarise and identify with the album straight away, the name of the artist and the name of the album so that people are aware of what it is called,  when the album is expected to be released along with the idea to be pre-ordered so that people know when to expect the release, usefull links to the artists social media pages so that people can follow her and her latest trends along with keeping up with what ever she's doing next plus finishing out more information, a barcode in which the audience can scan on their mobiles and instantly the song will begin to play and, the different platforms in which the song can be streamed upon/listened to.

The first shoot of our music video

Today we began shooting our music video for 'Love In The Dark' by 'Jazmine'. Me, Danny and Jazmine managed to get hold of a dark lit room with access to spotlights, meaning that we could manipulate the spotlights/stage lights to highlight certain things and manipulate the lighting to ensure it gave the feel of a spacious dark area. Today we just shot Jazmine doing miming/singing to the track and we did this with multiple takes with different camera shots and angles such as canted, low and high shots, with close ups on her face and mid shots so that we would have a lot to work with when editing happens for the music video. The stage lights worked highly effectively as we could use this to manipulate how dark and how light some of the scenes would look which was an advantage. Me and Danny both filmed on our cameras. I felt it was appropriate to use a dolly and place a camera and tripod on top so that I could get some tracking shots around the star smoothly.

The Digipak

After spending countless amounts of time, I have finally been able to finish my Digipak for 'Jazmine'. This Digipak contains: the album cover, album track listing, lyrics book, photo gallery, the CD of the album and a bonus DVD content which shows the album making process. After receiving feedback from the previous 1st draft of my first Digipak template design, I took this feedback aboard and made the essential altercations to make sure my Digipak was of best quality.

The Change of Narrative

After evaluating on the narrative process of the previous song for our music video 'Hurt' we found that the narrative would essentially be much harder to convey and show through the silhouette scenes in general. Also, it proved to be too time consuming to try and find people to help perform in front of the silhouette background. So, by changing the song for our music video to 'Love In The Dark', I felt as though this would be easier to convey the narrative of a heartbreak and a break up. The new narrative for the new music video will revolve around this through the silhouette scenes as Jazmine will be infront of symbolic imagery related to a heartbreak in terms of images of broken love heats, her throwing a hear locket that is given to her by her former boyfriend to the floor and other related symbolic imagery of a breakup. The video will still feature Jazmine performing her contemporary dance routine along with miming.

Change of Song Choice

After deciding that Christina Aguolera's song 'Hurt' isn't necessarily suitable for our artist, we collectively decided to change the song to Adele'a ballad 'Love In The Dark'. We decided to make this change as we felt as though the narrative of a breakup would be easier with this song as it is lyrically more tangible as opposed to the previous father and daughter narrative idea with 'Hurt'. (This version on YouTube is sped up but this isn't the sped up version we will be using).

Change of Font

After the feedback I received from our pitch, I found that not everyone was essentially fond of he original 'Team Captain Font' that I decided to use as the logo and font/typography for 'Jazmine' as people felt it didn't suit my artist appropriately. So, after taking this into account, I decided to do further research into 'dafont.com' and I came across a more subtle, classy and elegant font: 'Delta'. I felt as though this Font now perfectly suited with our artists and was a typography that I was happy to use.

Photo's Edited for Possibilty of being on the Digipak for JAZMINE

After evaluating countless times as to which pictures from the photo shoot I best fit my digipak for 'Jazmine', the below images were the final pictures that I decided to choose. To edit these pictures below, I used the editing software of Photoshop. By creating these pictures and editing them, I learnt the valuable skills of shortcuts within Photoshop and how to operate with the software to ensure I have theb best edited picture standards. I learnt how to erase difficult and small but significant details within the pictures, enhance them to their best of quality and, play around with different effects and positioning. Within this PowerPoint below, I will explain why I decided to choose each photo for my digipak.

Feedback on our Pitch from Class Members

This is a powerpoint presentation containing the feedback that our group received for the pitch presentation for our artist: 'JAZMINE'.

From the feedback, there was a variety of different things that my classmates liked about the pitch. For example, what I found they liked was the animatic storyboard for the potential music video, good biography, good explanations on points about JAZMINE, we were really in-depth and descriptive, a well-thought out narrative, artist fits well with the genre of music and, a good and detailed digipak created by myself. However, there were a couple of areas that my classmates thought that we culd improve on. For example, the logo typography of 'TEAM CAPTAIN' wasn't necessarily everyone's taste, along with some repetitive scenes within the animatic and, developing the narritve more.

By taking into account the feedback given to our group, we will ensure to evaluate them and improve upon the feedback in order to make our pitch, our artist, our typography font and the narrative and shots for our music video

The Pitch

To illustrate what our possible idea is for the music video and the possible narrative for our music video, me, Jazmine and Danny constructed a brief concept idea as what the music video may potentially look like. Since then, me and Jazmine have stayed behind consistently to help create the pitch which I created on PowerPoint to present to the class. The pitch includes information about our artist, their mood board and audience profile, along with the digipak and advertisement poster with a description of our possible idea of the music video. Me and Danny both presented our pitch to the class in order to express how our music video could possibly work.

Below is the PowerPoint for the pitch created by me (Tyrell) and helped by Jazmine.

The Photoshoot

Today, me, Jazmine and Danny decided to stay in our free period and create our vision for the photoshoot which will include potentially the album cover and digipak photo's for our artist 'JAZMINE'. We used props such as: a white background sheet, along with high-key lighting and the high definition cameras to take our pictures. In terms of make-up and costume, we managed to get Jazmine to wear natural coloured make-up with the exception of the current colour - brown - being her lipstick. For clothing, we also ensured that Jazmine would wear her black leotard with an oversized shirt, matching well with the theme of contemporary dance and sophistication yet trendiness with the popular make-up that most teenage girls wear. We took many shots from different camera angles such as: canted angles, high angles, low angles, close-ups on her face, mid shots and full portrait long shots.

Below is a PowerPoint of some of the photos that me and Danny took on the day.

Animatic of Storyboard for music video

I decided to create an animatics for the storyboard for the music video. I ensured that I stayed behind after school to complete the animatics which follows the storyboard along with the song 'HURT' being played along in the background. This indicated to the audience where and when certain things will be happening within the video, giving the audience an insight into how the video may possibly look. To create the animatics, I used the editing software: 'Final Cut Pro'.

Inspiration for Silhouette

The concept and idea for the silhouette scenes for the music video came from the winners of the UK TV show 'Britain's Got Talent'. After watching their silhouette reliant performance, this inspired both me and Jazmine to want to somehow incorporate this into the music video project. Below is a video clip of the winner's performance on the TV show.

Storyboards for music video: 'HURT'

After negotiating between myself, Danny and Jazmine, we created the main narrative for our music video and, we have started to plan how the music video will look and be executed. I drew each scene and shot which takes place within the storyboard and within the music video.

Magazine poster promoting JAZMINE's digipak album (Hand-drawn template)

After researching multiple different digipak magazine posters, I decided to hand-draw a digipak album poster promoting JAZMINE's new album 'The Illusion Of Love'. On this poster, it includes the same album cover from the digipak, the name of the artist, the name of the album, links to her social media and website, the release date of the album along with the option to pre-order, where you can stream/buy the album online such as: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Google Play Music and finally, a barcode phone scanner that when somebody scans it on their phone, their phone screen automatically begins to play the music video from the lead single 'Hurt'.

The Music Video Narrative

The narrative for our music video 'Hurt' follows the theme of Jazmine growing up and maturing as an adult. It begins with Jazmine as a child - in silhouette form - and her father being loving and nurturing, taking part in father and daughter bonding activities. But as the song progresses, we see Jazmine mature into her teenage and more adult life and, whilst she makes this transition into adulthood, she begins to forget her acknowledgement with her father. This results in the pair having an argument and Jazmine leaving on her accord. These scenes are shown within silhouettes and allures to the idea of a flashback through her life whist the star sings and dances throughout the video.

Digipak hand-drawn template for 'JAZMINE'

As part of my research into possible digipak templates and designs for our album's Digipak, I decided to hand draw and create a paper versioned digipak for Jamzine's album 'The Illusion Of Love'. My digipak includes: a front cover of a face shot close-up of my artist, a lyrics page from the songs on the album, a CD and bonus DVD section with an image of our artist behind it, an extra picture of Jazmine which contains extra photo galleries and a back cover of the track-listing of the songs on the album.

Christina Aguielera - 'Hurt' Song Choice

This is the song we as a group have decided to choose for the music video for our artist "Jazmine". After me and Jazmine researched into our artists musical taste of pop ballads, we felt as though this song was a perfect fit for the theme or sadness within our music video.

The LOGO

After intensively searching through 'Dafont.com', me and Jazmine have decided that the font that we will be using for our artist throughout things such as: the album cover, the digipack and essentially the typography used for our artists logo in general will be: the 'Team Captain Font'. We have decided to use this as our font choice because it is classy, elegant font which represents and compliments our artists characteristics and personality of being elegant and classy whilst still having something unique, innovative and different about them both off and on camera.

LOGO - Research

As part of my research towards the font choice of my logo, I have gone on to the website 'Dafont.com' and have selected a variety of different Logo fonts that I could potentially use for 'JAZMINE'.

'TEAM CAPTAIN FONT':

  • What intrigued me about this font was that it is very slick and stylish, whilst looking attractive and interesting. It is bold and would compliment well with the album cover/digipack font.

'MIXIVA BOLD FONT':
  • What I liked about this font is that it again, is elegant, sophisticated, classy and simple. It is easy to read, but it is possibly about too plain for the image we are trying to represent for 'Jazmine'.

'MARKET DECO FONT':

  • With this font, it again fits the theme of our artist being classy and elegant as it is very plain, traditional but isn't too over-exagerrative.

'BELLEROSE FONT':

  • With this font, it is bold, simple and classy but, has an intriguing twist in terms of having a traditional font. The letters 'A' and 'E' are stylised differently.

Mood Board

Today, both me and Jazmine have spent the entire day creating a mood board for our contemporary Pop artist: 'JAZMINE'. We did this by using a blank A3 piece of black sugar paper and printing off various different images from the internet to form a collage. What these images includes are images of what is similar to our artist. This includes what our artist likes to wear, the make-up our artist uses, the different hairstyles our artist is in to and, contemporary dance elements and symbols being present. We used a silhouette of a contemporary dancer, with collages of these different elements from our artist, along with glitter typography/writing in order to be eye-catching and tangible. What me and Jazmine both found in particular was that our artists' look was inspired by the fashion of class and elegance whilst still appearing to be current and trendy in terms of keeping up-to-date with the latest fashion trends and appeals. This includes a variety of classy and elegant dresses, along with a variety of trendy outfits.

Audience Profile

After deliberating between me, Jazmine and Danny, I decided to create an audience profile which provides information as to the type of audience and the type of people who would listen to our pop artist: JAZMINE. We have provided information as to what they like to watch, eat, wear and their annual income.

Genre Research (3 Similar Artists):

Collectively, between me, Jazmine and Danny, we have decided to choose our 3 main references of similar artists within our fitted genre of pop for our music video. The 3 we have chosen are: Adele, Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys. These 3 artists are the type of artists that we want to model our singer into similarly being like in terms of their style of music, the style of their music video and how they're represented as a whole. To demonstrate my research into these 3 artists, I will be using a PowerPoint. The majority of pictures that I have used within this PowerPoint have been hyper-linked with YouTube videos so be sure to click the pictures within my PowerPoint for the videos.

Our Genre: POP

As I am working within a group of 3 in order to start creating our music video, I have decided to work with Jazmine Sims and Danny Wright. The 3 of us have deided that the genre in which our music video will be is: Contemporary POP. After much deliberation, we have come to the conclusion that we would essentially like the fitted genre for our music video to be Pop/contemporary pop (which is a sub-genre from the genre of Pop). We, as a group, have decided upon this decision as we already have an idea as to the theme of our music video being emotional and sad, but the songs that we have been looking to choose for our music video would also fit amongst this theme.

Saturday 10 September 2016

Genre Brainstorm

As part of my research for the genre of my music video, I decided to create a Genre brainstorm, listing the majority of different genres within music and researching the specific songs which fit into this genre.

The Digipak: Analysis

A digipak is a style of cardboard used to package CD's for artists' singles/albums. There're commonly plastic trays located within the Digipak in order to be able to hold a CD. Particularly in the 2000's, Digipaks were in its most popular phase. In my opinion, I feel as though Digipak's offers something with generic CD's doesn't: exclusivity. This is because it isn't the usual way that CD's are released in today's society. So, the fact that it's different makes it feel much more exclusive when the consumers purchase the albums.

Iconic Digipak's usually consists of the following:
  • Iconic headshots featuring the artists' face
  • Iconic graphic designs
  • Usually consists of 4 creative panels
  • Front cover
  • Tracklistings
  • An iconic image
  • Will commonly feature 6 panels
The Digipaks that I have chosen to analyse is Rihanna's ANTI album, Lady Gaga's THE FAME MONSTER album and David Guetta's ONE MORE LOVE.

Rihanna - ANTI (2016):

Rihanna's ANTI album is a good and clear example of Digipak's being used in the current music industry. This follows the conventions of a successful and clear to see Digipak as it features roughly 6 panels, along with the content of a signed A3 sheet from Rihanna herself, also along with a photo gallery and the CD itself. Furthermore, it features an iconic front cover despite not having the artist herself featured on the front. What's also very interesting about this album's Digipak is that the title of the album and the name of the artist isn't at all apparent, which shows how unconventional this Digipak is compared to a standard and conventional Digipak.

Lady Gaga - THE FAME MONSTER (2009):

Lady Gaga's THE FAME MONSTER is a good example of a generic Digipak within the pop music industry. It features an iconic head shot image of the artist herself, along with the tracklisting located at the back of the Digipak, the CD located inside of the Digipak and a photo gallery of a photoshoot from the artist to help sell her image. What makes this Digipak feel more exclusive to the consumer, the font on the front cover which reads "Lady Gaga The Fame Monster" is printed in the colour of gold, whereas the general and standard CD case version of the same album is just printed in white. This allows the consumer to then feel more exclusive with the artist due to this reason.

David Guetta - ONE MORE LOVE (2009):
Image result for david guetta digipak

David Guetta's ONE MORE LOVE album is also another example of conventional Digipak. The typography used for the name of the title of the album is almost drawn on with the effect of paint, connoting to the audience and the consumers that there is a laidback and relaxed amount of effort from the artist, but - also connotes artistic. The iconic head shot featured for the front cover is in black and white in contrast to the overflow of paint on the tracklist and the rest of the Digipak.

Green Screen Analysis of Iconic Digipak

Below is a green screen analysis of Lady Gaga's - The Fame Monster digipak.

Digipak Magazine Analysis

Digipak's often gain publicity through advertisements. This is most commonly done through the feature of magazine adverts for digipak's. Adverts for digipak's are often used to allow the public to familiarise themselves with the new album and to familiarise themselves with the artists. This allows them to know what to be looking out for when getting new music.

Most commonly, magazines advertising new digipak releases traditionally follow the conventions of: featuring the artist of the album, the name of the album, the songs that the public already knows included within the album, the release date of the album, the name of the artist, further information details on the artist such as a website and, platforms in which the album can be listened by. Within this example of a magazine digipak advertisement by Lana Del Rey for her album 'Born To Die', it features all of these conventions. This advertisement features: the artist, the same front cover of the album cover, the name of the artist, the name of the album, the release date, further information details with the website of the artist, the singles that her album includes and the platform of 'Amazon' in which people can hear her new album.

Green Screen Analysis of Iconic Magazine Advert for Digipak's

This is a green screen analysis that I made for Lana Del Rey's digipak magazine advert.
